The Redwood tree is one of the oldest living things on Planet Earth. The work illustrates the magic of the Entire Redwood Forest as an interdependent community including coast Douglas fir, Pacific Madrone, Tanoak, Western Hemlock, and other trees, along with a wide variety of ferns, mosses, mushrooms, and redwood sorrel. Several factors, including rainfall, create a soil with fewer nutrients than the trees need, causing them to depend heavily on the entire biotic community of the forest, especially complete recycling of the trees when dead. Old-growth redwood stands provide habitat for the federally threatened spotted owl and the California- endangered marbled murrelet.
